This is an unsual type of battery. It's a A23. I don't find many uses for this kind of battery, but they are very reliable and cost effective for what i am using them. At work we need it for a doorbell and so far they have lasted a long time. The doorbell gets open a lot and for the price you could not have gotten ones for the same price locally.

Has 5 lights, but only either 3 work or the other 2. The button is really hard to press and it feels super cheap. It'll probably break the first time i go camping with it. I wouldn't recommend. Feels like it should cost 5 bucks max.

The product description of PowerGenix Nickel-Zinc Rechargeable AA cell promises many advantages over other rechargeable batteries: higher voltage, higher energy density, lighter weight, longer cycle life, and so on. But how does it stack up against the current gold-standard of low-self-discharge NiMH cell, the Sanyo Eneloop? Let's examine the following aspects:
[Operating Voltage]
The NiZn cell has a nominal voltage of 1.65V, which is 30% higher than that of a NiMH cell (1.25V nominal). When freshly charged, its terminal voltage is even higher at 1.85V!
[Power Density]
Since 'Power' is defined as 'Voltage * Current', most people may assume that "30% higher Voltage" translates to "30% higher Power". But it depends on the application:
- Most electronic gadgets (digital camera, MP3 player, etc) contain internal DC/DC regulators which operate in constant-power mode. If the battery voltage is higher, then input current will drop to maintain the same output power. That's why higher voltage alone does not make your digital camera shoot any faster.
(One exception is photo flash unit, which operates in constant-current mode. So in this case, 30% higher voltage does translate to 30% higher power and shorter cycle time)
- For an unregulated appliance such as a flashlight or power tool, its current increases with voltage (although not linearly). A typical 2-AA flashlight bulb is rated for 2.3V * 0.5A = 1.15W. When you apply 3.6V to it, the current may increase to 0.65A, so the power consumption is now 3.6V * 0.65A = 2.3W. Twice the power means twice the heat. That's why the bulb may burn out in seconds.
[Energy Density]
The PowerGenix AA cells are marketed as "2500 milli-WATT-hour" (energy capacity). Most people may confuse this with "2500 milli-Ampere-hour" (charge capacity). But the data sheet for NiZn AA cell shows that its current capacity is only 1500mAh (this is verified by my own testing). It turns out that an 1500mAh NiZn cell actually contains the same amount of energy as a 2000mAh SANYO eneloop AA cell:
- Energy in eneloop AA cell: 1.25V * 2000mAh = 2500mWh
- Energy in PowerGenix AA cell: 1.65V * 1500mAh = 2475mWh
[Weight]
The weight of each NiZn AA cell (25g) is essentially the same as that for eneloop AA cell (27g). For certain applications, it is possible to use three NiZn cells (3*1.65=5V) to replace four NiMH cells (4*1.25V=5V). Doing so reduces battery weight by 25%, but it also shortens run time by 25%.
[Cycle Life]
Technical data found on PowerGenix web site says NiZn cells are rated for 200 cycles (at 100% deep-discharge). This is much shorter than the 1000 cycles cited for eneloop cells.
I have tested a set of 4 PowerGenix AA cells. After subjecting them through 12-16 deep discharge cycles, the average charge capacity already dropped 5% from original value. In comparison, I have a set of 4 eneloop AAA cells that have went through about 100 cycles in the past 2.5 years, and they still exhibit over 95% of original capacity.
[Self-Discharge Rate]
In my long-term storage test after two months, a set of four NiZn cells retained 74% original charge capacity on average. This translates to about 13% loss per month, which is much better than that of ordinary high-capacity NiMH batteries (with capacity > 2500mAh). But it cannot compare to low-self-discharge NiMH cells.
Previously, I have conducted storage test for several brands of LSD cells, including Sanyo eneloop, Rayovac Hybrid, and Kodak Pre-Charged. All those cells can retain 85-90% of original capacity after FIVE months in storage.
[Recharging Time]
The PowerGenix NiZn cells must be recharged using a specially designed PowerGenix NiZn Charger. The charger is called '1-hour', but it actually takes 2.5 hours to fully recharge a set of four 1500mAh cells.
Eneloop (and all other brands of LSD cells) can be recharged using any good quality 'smart' NiMH charger. Depending on which charger you use, the charge time can be as short as 15 minutes, or as long as 8 hours.
[BOTTOM LINE]
The only verifiable benefit for PowerGenix NiZn cell is its higher operation voltage. However, even this may turn out to be a curse rather than a blessing, as higher voltage can cause unregulated appliances to burn out.
If you have a digital camera that works well with eneloop, stay with it. Switching to NiZn will not offer more power, nor longer run time. Only if your camera does not work well with eneloop, then it is worthwhile to try NiZn cells as a last resort. But you better contact PowerGenix, and ask whether they will assume warranty liability for the use in your camera. Otherwise, try it at your own risk![Update on Nov 21, 2010]
My first set of four NiZn cells was used for capacity testing and long-term self-discharge testing. They have gone though maybe 20-30 deep discharge/recharge cycles (discharged down to 0.9V only, not 0V) over the past year. As of right now, two out of four cells have already failed, suffering from voltage depression and rapid self-discharge problems. The other two suffered from reduced capacity (~1200mAh, down from the original 1500mAh). The PowerGenix '1-hour' charger needs to detect 1.9V during charging, before it can change from constant-current mode to constant-voltage mode. When voltage-depression hits a cell, its voltage cannot reach 1.9V during charging, so the NiZn charger will simply fry the cell!

These were great for the first six months, but then started to degrade significantly after that. I use the top-of-line slow recharger from MAHA, and even with attempts to revive them two of four wouldn't hold a charge and my camera wouldn't even turn on with the batteries fresh from the charger.
The weight of these batteries gives you some sense that these could be subpar made - when I compare the weight of these batteries in-hand with those from another manufacturer I noticed these have half the weight of other AAs. I recommend the Green hybrid series from Sony or regular NiMH batteries from from Panasonic or Sony (orange series) that have

Was searching for rechargeables for a few weeks that were reasonably priced, looked on Amazon and came across these TRUCell NiMH 2700s. So, I decided to give Accessory Power a try, the buy was easy, the Price was Great, the shipping was fast and the Batteries, they work Really Great, I got the 20 Pack. I use them in my Camera, my Flashlight and in my Solar Lights on the deck out back, they really lit up the place. As I googled the Internet and Forums, I found mixed result, some people claims Eneloop performs better, and some claims otherwise. Therefore I decided to do an experiment on both of these batteries to find out which one is a BETTER PERFORMER and better for investment.
Objective: To find out the better performer battery
Items:
1. Four pieces of Sanyo Eneloop AA 2000mAh NiMH Battery
2. Four pieces of PowerEx Imedion AA 2100mAh NiMH Battery
3. Nikon Speedlight SB-800
4. Remote Flash Trigger
5. Process recording device (Sony DSC-P10)
Methodology:
1. Fully Charge the battery
2. Insert battery into Nikon Speedlight SB800
3. Nikon Speedlight SB-800 set to M 1/4 -oEV
4. Fire the Speedlight as soon as it is ready (when the red light is on)
5. Repeat step #3 until the battery is completely depleted
6. Record the following:
a. X number of shots per minute after X number of shots
b. Total shots per charge
7. Repeat the process with next set of battery
To ensure both battery both are in identical optimal condition, I bought both new set of Eneloop and Imedion. Both sets are new and fully charged for 8 hours as recommended by manufacturer for initial use with the same PowerEx MH-C204W Travel Charger before begin the test.

I started off with Eneloop with a recorded blazing fast 60 round per minute (rpm). It drops to 53rpm after the first 100 shots, and then it drops further to 52rpm after 200 shots. It stabilized at average of 45rpm from 300 shots to 1300 shots. It drops to 39rpm at 1400 shots and drops further to 37rpm after 1500 shots. Finally it drops sharply but still managed to squeeze a total recorded 1564 shots. Pretty impressive for first round.
I followed by Imedion immediately. At the initial minute it has a noticeable lower refresh rate compared with Eneloop and I recorded a 51rpm for the first minute, lower than Eneloop 9rpm. It then dropped 20% performance to 42rpm after the first 100 shots. After 200 shots, it stabilized at average of 39rpm from 200 shots to 1200 shots (compared to 45rpm Eneloop). It drops slightly to 36rpm after 1300 shots to 1500 shots. Then it drops further down to 17rpm after 1600 shots. Finally it is completely depleted at 1660 shots.
Conclusion:
Eneloop completed at 1564 shoots and Imedion completed at 1660, approximately 100 shots more than Eneloop, which is pretty much expected as it is a 2100mAh vs 2000mAh, with approximately 5% extra power. For a fair comparison, I only benchmark up to 1500 shots, which is already beyond what average number of photos a person can take on a whole day event (with speedlight)
On cycle performance point of view, Eneloop out performed Imedion from 4rpm to 14rpm with an amazing everage of 6rpm on a consistant performance.
In this experiment, I concluded that the Sanyo Eneloop is a better performer than PowerEx Imedion, at least in speedlight point of view.

When I first saw the product description of Rayovac Platinum LSD NiMH AA, my immediate reaction was: "Oh no! Not ANOTHER new wrapper for the same old Rayovac Hybrid!". After all, that's exactly what Rayovac did last year for the so-called Rayovac 4.0 cells. But after examining this package more carefully, it turns out to be not the case.
First encouraging sign: unlike the case with 'Rayovac 4.0' cells, those 'Platinum' LSD cells actually have their capacity number printed on each cell (2100mAh for AA, 800mAh for AAA).
I measured those Rayovac Platinum AA cells upon arrival using my La Crosse BC-900, and they contain about 87% of their rated capacity. After two discharge/recharge cycles, their average capacity reached 2095mAh. This performance is very consistent with that of the old Rayovac Hybrid AA cells. However, by comparing the shapes of their (+) and (-) terminals, I can tell that the 'Platinum' cells are indeed different from 'Rayovac Hybrid' and 'Rayovac 4.0' cells. (Check out my Customer Image and judge for yourself)
Rayovac claims that the Platinum's charge retention rate is same as previous generation Rayovac LSD cells: 80% after 6 months, 60% after 12 months. In contrast, Sanyo claims the eneloop can retain 85% charge after 12 months. My own testing has shown that this claim is accurate.
One disturbing sign is that: Rayovac states that the lifespan of new Platinum cell is only '275 cycles', while previously it was '500 cycles' for the old Rayovac Hybrid.
In summary, the new Rayovac 'Platinum' LSD cell is not any better than the old 'Hybrid', yet it may suffer from shorter lifespan. As of this moment, it is being sold at a much higher price than Rayovac Hybrid and Sanyo eneloop, so it is just not a good value.
[Update on Oct 16, 2010]
Long-term self-discharge test: after 3 months sitting on the shelf, a pair of Rayovac Platinum AA cells retained 83% of original capacity. This is slightly worse than the rate for old Rayovac Hybrid, whcih typically can retain 85% after 5 months.

These are very good batteries. I charged those in my La Crosse BC-900 Charger. The following were the results after first charge.
The four AAAs rated 1000mAh nominal (min 930mAh), all come out above 1000mAh, but very close to 1000mAh. I used the discharge setting of 100mA and charge at 200mA. (Those who use the BC-900 will know what I am talking about).
The four AAs rated 2700mAh nominal (min 2500mAh) come out ranging 2.8Ah to 3.0Ah. I used the discharge setting of 250mA and charged at 500mA.
I just started to use these batteries and do not know long term reliability. So far I am very happy with them.

The product description of Rayovac 4.0 AA cells appears to be intentionally deceptive. It says "Rechargeable Battery with Lithium Technology", but did not mention anything about the battery chemistry, voltage, and capacity. On the front of the package it says "Compare to ADVANCED LITHIUM", and "Ready to use like LITHIUM". All these seem to give the impression that "Rayovac 4.0" is similar to the Energizer L91BP Lithium AA Battery, which has a higher operating voltage (1.6V) and larger capacity (3000mAh) compared to normal NiMH AA cells.
Upon closer examination, however, you'll see the fine print of "NiMH 1.2V" on each cell. Suspiciously, its capacity (mAh) is still not specified. So despite of all the hype, this is still a Nickel-Metal Hydride battery, perhaps with a trace amount of Lithium added to justify the claim of "Lithium Technology".
I tested four Rayovac 4.0 AA cells using my La Crosse BC-900. Right out of the package, they hold an average charge of 1485mAh, or about 70% of full capacity. After two more charge/discharge cycles, their avarege capacity improved to 2080mAh. This performance is nearly identical to that of Rayovac Hybrid AA Batteries, which I have tested many times before. Further examination also revealed that the (+) and (-) terminals of "Rayovac 4.0" are exactly the same shape as "Rayovac Hybrid". Therefore I'm convinced that those two series are in fact the same cell under different wrappers.
I really dislike the shiny wrapper of "Rayovac 4.0" cell. It makes the cell look too much like the Energizer Lithium AA cell, and it doesn't even mention "Rechargeable" on the wrapper. I can only imagine how many of those rechargeable cells were thrown out after first use, because people confused them with desposable cells.
On the other hand, the price for 8 of those "Rayovac 4.0" AA cells is less than half that of Sanyo Eneloop 8 Pack AA (as of this writing). This makes them an amazing value. It is much better to buy those, instead of trying your luck with other so-called "Ready-to-Use" rechargeable batteries from less reputable brands.
[Update on Feb 25, 2010]
Data on long-term self-discharge rate: I have tested four each of Rayovac 4.0 AA and AAA cells, after 100 days of storage at approximately 19 degree C. The average charge retained in both sets were exactly 86% of original. This is consistent with the self-discharge characteristics of Sanyo eneloop and Rayovac Hybrid.

I have owned these for about four months. Mostly they are used in a DSLR camera.
I find that, when freshly charged, they are superb, giving lots of life and fast performance in the DSLR, which relies heavily on good battery power. They also charge fine, with no memory problems, in the Sony charger.
However, these batteries lose power when not in use. Most AAA rechargeables do, of course. But there are a new sort on the market that minimize the power drain when not in use. I have tried some, the eneloops.
They are just plain better than these Sony batteries. Eneloops fire right up and last longer even when they have not been in use for days or weeks. I find this makes a big difference because I don't have to recharge every time I start out a day with my camera.

Believe the positive reviews of these batteries, they are the best you can buy, and that even means the other brands rated 2700mAh (or more). I have more than 60 of these, I use them in torches, remote controls, wireless mice / keyboards, anything that will take them.
If you have a charger like mine (Maha WizardOne MH-C9000) that will take a capacity reading, do a comparison for yourself against Energizers, generic, chinese cells, anything. And you will find like I did that the Duracells have higher capacity and lower leakage than any high capacity AA cell. After a slow charge, you will find,
Duracells: All read very close to 2650mAh
Energizers: Rarely more than 90% of stated capacity
Others: Almost never their stated capacity. BTY brand bought on Ebay from 'superglobalstore' were abysmal, and measured 800mAh (2500mAh stated)In terms of leakage:
Duracell 2650mAh AA: These hold their charge a very long time, not quite to the Eneloop level but much more capacity and current delivery capability than Eneloop.
Energiser: These are VERY leaky, after a month they are nearly discharged completely, Duracell are still at about 85% capacity.
Others: I have not waited to test but my hopes are not high.Another indication of the quality of these Duracells is their weight. Duracells are 30.4 grams each, Energizers are also good at 29.4 grams. But you try some other cheap brands and they are impossibly light, some at 15 grams or less. If Duracell could make them lighter with the same capacity I am sure they would, so clearly the weight is required to achieve the stated capacity.
To be fair, I had one of these Duracells that leaked severely and was flat in a few days, but the remaining cells (more than 60) all hold charge like champions. I know because I have them in test equipment that hasnt been touched for 12 months and they still fire up nicely. Same with remote controls, which have trivial discharge rate during operation and only need replacement when the cells discharge on thier own.
The Energizers are the closest I could find in quality. They are quite good if you charge them and use them immediately, otherwise they discharge too fast, and are not quite up to their capacity rating either. But they can supply a lot of current quickly for things such as flash units (as can the Duracells).
Unfortunately you get what you pay for with batteries, and Duracell are close to the most expensive, but I find them well worth it.

IMPORTANT UPDATE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wrote the above review about 8 months ago; At the time I felt these were the best batteries available. Recently I needed some more, so I bought another 20 of them. TO MY SURPRISE THEY ARE GARBAGE. The superb ones I got initially are like those pictured here, with a green and black body. The new version ones have a gold top more or less where the green area is in the picture. Its the typical duracell style gold top, but rechargeable and the same capacity.
I dont know why, but the new batteries I bought are VERY leaky and dont hold a charge longer than a week or two. And their discharge rates vary so that some are still half charged when the others are empty. Compare this to the ones I reviewed before, which last in some devices for 12 months or more.
I should mention again that the good ones have the green top and the crap ones have the gold top. I do not know if this is a rule that can be relied upon but I do regret giving folks the impression that all AA Duracell 2650MAh rechargeables are high quality. PLEASE RETHINK BUYING THESE.

The product description of Rayovac 4.0 AA cells appears to be intentionally deceptive. It says "Rechargeable Battery with Lithium Technology", but did not mention anything about the battery chemistry, voltage, and capacity. On the front of the package it says "Compare to ADVANCED LITHIUM", and "Ready to use like LITHIUM". All these seem to give the impression that "Rayovac 4.0" is similar to the Energizer L91BP Lithium AA Battery, which has a higher operating voltage (1.6V) and larger capacity (3000mAh) compared to normal NiMH AA cells.
Upon closer examination, however, you'll see the fine print of "NiMH 1.2V" on each cell. Suspiciously, its capacity (mAh) is still not specified. So despite of all the hype, this is still a Nickel-Metal Hydride battery, perhaps with a trace amount of Lithium added to justify the claim of "Lithium Technology".
I tested four Rayovac 4.0 AA cells using my La Crosse BC-900. Right out of the package, they hold an average charge of 1485mAh, or about 70% of full capacity. After two more charge/discharge cycles, their avarege capacity improved to 2080mAh. This performance is nearly identical to that of Rayovac Hybrid AA Batteries, which I have tested many times before. Further examination also revealed that the (+) and (-) terminals of "Rayovac 4.0" are exactly the same shape as "Rayovac Hybrid". Therefore I'm convinced that those two series are in fact the same cell under different wrappers.
I really dislike the shiny wrapper of "Rayovac 4.0" cell. It makes the cell look too much like the Energizer Lithium AA cell, and it doesn't even mention "Rechargeable" on the wrapper. I can only imagine how many of those rechargeable cells were thrown out after first use, because people confused them with desposable cells.
On the other hand, the price for 8 of those "Rayovac 4.0" AA cells is less than half that of Sanyo Eneloop 8 Pack AA (as of this writing). This makes them an amazing value. It is much better to buy those, instead of trying your luck with other so-called "Ready-to-Use" rechargeable batteries from less reputable brands.
[Update on Feb 25, 2010]
Data on long-term self-discharge rate: I have tested four each of Rayovac 4.0 AA and AAA cells, after 100 days of storage at approximately 19 degree C. The average charge retained in both sets were exactly 86% of original. This is consistent with the self-discharge characteristics of Sanyo eneloop and Rayovac Hybrid.

I have had the same charger for 6 years, I love it. I do not have the patience to wait for overnight or 3+ hours for batteries to charge. I am replacing mine only because after so many years the cord is getting frayed. I would definitely recommend this product. The batteries do get a little hot, but I have not have any problems with it.

I can't believe it! Just when we thought we've got the Duracell battery color scheme figured out, those folks at Duracell pulled another cheap trick out of their collective... hat!
To recall, here is the color scheme for Duracell AA/AAA batteries:
- Duracell alkaline cell has the famous 'copper top' and a black bottom
- Traditional Duracell Rechargeable NiMH (DC2400) cell is green and black in color
- Newer Duracell Pre Charged NiMH cell has a 'copper top' and a green/black bottom
The latest batch of rechargeable AA/AAA NiMH cells from Duracell all have the 'copper top' and green/black bottom, similar to that for 'Pre Charged' version. However, those cells don't say 'Pre Charged' on them. Instead, they have their capacity printed (2650mAh for Duracell DC1500 AA, 1000mAh for Duracell DC2400B4N AAA). It is important to know that: those are NOT the low-self-discharge type like Sanyo Eneloop. They are traditional NiMH cells, which have higher capacity but suffer from rapid self-discharge problem. So even though their prices may look attractive, those are no bargains.
Remember: "If it doesn't say 'Pre Charged', put it back!"

This new eneloop package (Sanyo Eneloop Ni-MH Charger and 8 Rechargeable AA and 4 Rechargeable AAA Batteries) contains 12 of the 2nd-gen eneloop cells, and the MQN06 4-cell charger. Note that unlike the previous eneloop Power Pack Kit, there are no C- and D-shell adapters in this package.
The rated capacities of those new eneloop cells are the same as that of original eneloop: 2000mAh for AA, 800 for AAA. All batteries are made in Japan. The charger is made in China.
I have tested 4 new eneloop AA cells, using my La Crosse BC-900 Battery Charger:
- Right out of the package, the average remaining charge is 1557mAh (min=1551, max=1564)
- After just one charge/discharge cycle, the average capacity rises to 2100mAh (min=2070, max=2130). This is 5% higher than the rated value!
Date code embossed on the AA cells is "10-04 0Y". I assume that means April 2010. Note that just like the old eneloop, the new ones are only charged to 75-80% when leaving factory.
According to the package and also Sanyo web site, the new eneloop is supposed to offer the following advantages over the original:
- "Holds charge up to 3 years" (85% after 1 year, 80% after 2, 75% after 3)
- "Recharge 1500x" (vs. "1000x" for original)
- "Suitable for temperature as low as -20 degree C" (vs. -10)
In real life, it is nearly impossible for the user to experience those benefits. If you recharge the new eneloop twice every week, it will take 15 years to reach 1500 cycles! Also the new self-discharge rate is not much different from that for the old eneloop (which claims 85% after 1 year, 80% after 2). So it is probably not worth paying an extra premium over the old eneloop, just for those perceived benefits.
However, there is one visible benefit for the new eneloop: it comes in different colors!
- The 8 AA cells consist of 4 light-blue and 4 dark-blue
- The 4 AAA cells consist of 2 light-green and 2 dark-green
This makes it easier for the new eneloop to be arranged in groups. For example, you may use one color group in your camera and another group as spare. Plus the new colors looked very nice, too.
The charger included in this package, on the other hand, is a big let-down. It is the same old Sanyo MQN06 which is slow and only charges in pairs. It is simply inexcusable that Sanyo continue to package their best rechargeable batteries with their worst charger. In my case, the price I paid (at a local warehouse Club) is cheaper than buying 12 new eneloop cells separately, so I just tell myself that the charger is thrown in for free. Otherwise I would subtract one star from the rating.
[Update July 29, 2010]
I have tested 4 new eneloop AAA cells, date code "10-05 0B":
- Average remaining charge out of package is 619mAh
- After two more charge/discharge cycles, the average capacity reached 830mAh.
That's what I like most about those eneloop cells (both new and old). They are highly consistent, and their measured capacities are usually higher than rated values.

Long term self-discharge data: I have tested a pair of new eneloop AA cell, after nearly 4 months (115 days) of storage. The average remaining charge is 89% of full capacity. This result is slightly better than that of the original eneloop, which usually reatins about 87% after three months. But the difference is within margin of error of my experiments.
